Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities you will ever visit. It is full of history, architecture, stunning landscapes and a wealth of culture. The main events in the calendar are the festivals held in August, which include the International Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Military Tattoo and International Book Festival. At this time of year the streets come alive with street performers and stalls making for a vibrant atmosphere.
Another time of year not to miss is Christmas and Hogmanay, the street party held on Princes Street on New Year's Eve is a world renowned event. A visit in December for shopping would allow you to take in the authentic German market and the Winter Wonderland which brings to life the magic that is Christmas.
The International Film Festival is held in June. At any other time of year a visit to Edinburgh provides a diverse array of attractions. Whether you enjoy museums, art galleries, historic buildings, literature, nightlife, theatre or just the simply ambience of the city, however long your stay is you will wish it had been longer.
For the family, the festivals have lots of children's shows, especially the Fringe Festival and the Book Festival. Attractions to occupy the children include Edinburgh Zoo, Dynamic Earth, Botanic Gardens and the National Museum of Scotland. There are also plenty of green spaces to burn off any excess energy.
